Calm, Not Unconscious

What sedation dentistry actually is

Sedation dentistry at Hammons Family Dental uses two trusted methods — nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) and oral sedation — to ease dental anxiety in North Austin and Georgetown, TX. With both, you remain awake and responsive but deeply relaxed, making preventive, restorative, and cosmetic care comfortable even for fearful patients.

Sedation dentistry uses safe, proven medication to ease dental anxiety and create a calm, stress-free experience. Both of our methods are designed to fit a wide range of comfort levels: you remain awake and able to respond during treatment, but feel deeply relaxed throughout the visit.

That makes it easier to receive important preventive care, restorative treatments like fillings or crowns, and even cosmetic procedures — without fear or discomfort. If you’ve been avoiding the dentist because of anxiety, sedation can help you get the care you need while staying comfortable and confident in the chair.

During your consultation, we discuss your dental history, level of anxiety, and the treatments you need, then recommend the sedation method best suited for you.

Two Trusted Options

Nitrous oxide or oral sedation — your choice

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

A gentle sedative breathed through a small nose mask, bringing calm or light euphoria without unconsciousness. Effects wear off quickly once the gas stops — you can drive yourself home and resume normal activities right after.

Oral Sedation

For deeper relaxation: a prescribed medication taken shortly before your appointment. You stay awake and responsive but significantly calmer, often with limited memory of the procedure. You’ll need a trusted companion to drive you home.

Safety & Monitoring

We review your medical history, medications, and allergies first — and monitor heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels throughout, adjusting sedation promptly if needed.

Simple Preparation

Nitrous oxide generally needs no fasting or special prep. Oral sedation may require a few hours without food or drink beforehand — you’ll get a thorough list of do’s and don’ts either way.

Who It Helps

More than anxiety relief

Anxiety, gag reflex, past trauma

Moderate nervousness about routine cleanings, a strong gag reflex, low pain tolerance, or a past negative dental experience — sedation eases each of them and helps reframe future visits in a positive light.

More done in one visit

Feeling relaxed lets us work more effectively — sometimes completing multiple treatments in a single session. If your schedule is tight, deeper relaxation helps you breeze through longer appointments.

Better long-term oral health

Without anxiety holding you back, you’re less likely to skip essential care — so minor issues get addressed early, before they become major complications like advanced decay or gum disease.

“Don’t let fear stand in the way of a healthy, confident smile — sedation transforms dental care from daunting to doable, one comfortable visit at a time.”

Common Questions

Questions patients ask about sedation

Will I be unconscious during sedation dentistry?

No. With nitrous oxide and oral sedation you’ll be awake or in a light sleep-like state, remaining responsive throughout your care — deeply relaxed, not asleep.

Is sedation safe for children?

In many cases, yes. Nitrous oxide is often used for children who have difficulty sitting still or experience significant fear. Each child’s medical background is carefully evaluated first to ensure safety.

Are there side effects?

Nitrous oxide side effects are minimal and dissipate quickly once the gas stops. Oral sedation may leave you groggy for a few hours, so you’ll need a companion to escort you home.

Can I drive myself home afterward?

After nitrous oxide, yes — its effects wear off within minutes. After oral sedation, no — plan for a trusted friend or family member to drive you home.

Which sedation option is right for me?

That depends on your anxiety level, health history, and the treatment planned. At your consultation, Dr. Hammons reviews your history and recommends the best fit — and explains the trade-offs of each so you can choose.
