A crown that starts and finishes the same morning
The traditional way to make a crown takes three weeks and two appointments. You get numbed, the tooth gets prepared, an impression goes to an outside lab, and you go home in a plastic temporary that you are told not to floss around and not to chew on. Two or three weeks later you come back, get numbed again, and the real crown goes on — assuming the temporary hasn’t come off in the meantime, which is a call our front desk used to take constantly.
CEREC removes the lab and the wait from that sequence. A digital scanner replaces the impression tray. The crown is designed on screen while you sit there, milled from a single block of ceramic in the next room, then stained, glazed and bonded to your tooth. You leave with the finished restoration.
The practical difference is not just convenience. A temporary crown is a weak seal on a prepared tooth for three weeks. Removing those three weeks removes the sensitivity, the dietary restrictions, and the risk that the temporary fails while you are traveling.
When a same-day crown is the right answer
A cracked or broken tooth
The most common reason. A cusp breaks off, often on an old filling, and the tooth needs full coverage rather than another patch.
A large old filling that’s failing
Silver fillings expand and contract for decades. Eventually the tooth around them fractures. A crown rebuilds the whole biting surface.
After a root canal
A treated tooth is brittle and needs protection. Doing the crown the same day closes the window where it can split.
A worn-down bite
Grinding flattens teeth over years. Crowns restore the height and the function.
A single discolored front tooth
Where a filling would always show a seam, a milled ceramic crown can be shade-matched to the teeth on either side.
A crown that came off
If the underlying tooth is sound we can often re-bond it; if it isn’t, we can make the replacement that morning.
What the appointment actually looks like
1 — Numb and prepare
Local anesthetic, then the damaged structure is removed and the tooth is shaped for the crown. About 30 minutes.
2 — Digital scan
A small camera photographs the tooth and the bite. No impression tray, no putty, nothing to gag on.
3 — Design
The crown is designed on screen against your own bite. You can see it before it exists.
4 — Mill
The milling unit cuts the crown from a ceramic block in about 15 minutes. This is the part patients ask to watch.
5 — Stain, glaze and fire
The crown is characterized to match neighboring teeth and fired for strength.
6 — Fit and bond
We check the contacts and the bite, adjust, and bond it permanently. You eat normally that afternoon.

Can I really get a permanent crown in one visit?
Yes. Our North Austin office designs, mills and bonds CEREC ceramic crowns on site. You arrive with a damaged tooth and leave with the final crown cemented. There is no temporary and no second appointment.
How long does a same-day crown appointment take?
Usually about two hours from start to finish, most of which is the milling and the bonding. Many patients book the 7:00am slot and are at work by mid-morning.
Are CEREC crowns as strong as lab-made crowns?
They are milled from a solid block of ceramic, so there is no layering to chip apart. For most single-tooth crowns the strength and lifespan are comparable to a lab crown. There are cases — certain bridges, some front-tooth cosmetic work where we want a ceramist’s hand — where a lab is genuinely the better choice, and we will tell you when that is true.
Do same-day crowns cost more?
No. We price them the same as a traditional crown. You save the second appointment, the temporary, and the two weeks of chewing carefully on one side.
Does insurance cover a CEREC crown?
Crowns are typically covered the same way regardless of how they are made. We file your insurance for you and give you the estimate before we begin.
What if my crown needs a root canal first?
We’ll tell you before we start. Dr. Jain performs root canal therapy in house, so in many cases the root canal and the crown can be handled without referring you elsewhere.
